Juneteenth Recap

We gave time back to our people for celebration, reflection, learning and community action, for Juneteenth, which commemorates the announcement of freedom to the last enslaved African Americans in the Confederate states. Here's a selection of some activities that #TeamMindshare were involved in on the day.

Community Action

Daniele Kohen, our West Coast Lead, took action with his family and showed up to protest. Ama Blankson-Barnes, also in LA, took part in a virtual Juneteenth event called Party for Purpose. Lisa Reid attended the Atlanta chapter's monthly NAACP meeting.

Supporting Black Communities

Katie Schnepf, one of our client leads, visited Chicago’s only black-female-owned bookstore and read ‘Happy Within’ with her daughter, Ella. Janet Levine, Managing Director of Invention+ based in NY, virtually explored exhibitions, online collections and educational resources at the National Museum of African American History & Culture (part of the Smithsonian). Many of us also supported other local black-owned businesses, from restaurants (for take-out) to shops and more.

Learning and Education

Michael Soroosh (Chicago), in Comms Planning, is documenting and sharing his recent realizations on bottles of homebrewed beer. Scott Wensman, our Atlanta office lead, read the actual historical documents that led up to Freedom Day and through the Constitutional amendment abolishing slavery, starting with Emancipation Proclamation. Karen Bennett, a client lead in NY, watched the CNN and Sesame Street town hall with her kids.

Books, other reading material, films, documentaries, podcasts, were shared by our teams, including Isabel Ng's (NY) comprehensive Black Lives Matter resources.
