SXSW 2023: Sex Work to Cornrows: It’s Not Unprofessional

On the heels of the Great Resignation, Mindshare took the stage at SXSW alongside leaders from Plurawl, Arise, and Study Hall to unpack what “professionalism” really means, to challenge traditional ways of working, and to explore how creating a more inclusive work environment benefits both individuals and businesses.

Moderated by Arielle Egozi, Global Speaker & Author, Brand Advisor and Creative Consultant, Study Hall, the panel featured:

  • Rachel Lowenstein, Global Head of Inclusive Innovation, Mindshare
  • Pabel Martinez, CEO, Plurawl
  • Giva Wilkerson, Head of Community Care, Arise

4 key takeaways from the session:

  1. Prioritize Diversity and Inclusion:

The panelists highlighted how code-switching and assimilation can have negative impacts on mental health and productivity. As Martinez put it, "be the representation you wish you had when you were younger." This sentiment echoed throughout the discussion, highlighting the need for companies to prioritize diversity and inclusion. This means integrating diversity and inclusion efforts into hiring, promotion, and retention practices, as well as creating a culture that values and celebrates diverse identities.

  1. Hold Employers Accountable:

The panelists discussed the importance of top-down support for diversity and inclusion initiatives, with the recognition that change must come from the highest levels of leadership. The panelists stressed the importance of holding employers accountable for creating inclusive work environments.

  1. Creativity Thrives in Safe Spaces:

Lowenstein highlighted that individuals thrive and do their best work when they feel safe, and creating a safe and inclusive work environment requires intentional effort. This involves recognizing the value of diverse perspectives and contributions, and creating spaces that allow individuals to bring their whole selves to work.

  1. Have Compassion and Empathy:

The panelists recognized that unlearning biases and creating inclusive environments can be a challenging process, and they emphasized the importance of having compassion and empathy for others as we work towards these goals.

Overall, the discussion challenged the audience to rethink traditional ideas of professionalism and to prioritize inclusivity and celebration of diverse identities in the workplace. The panelists encouraged individuals to advocate for themselves and others, and for employers to take intentional action towards creating more inclusive work environments.
