Tech Guardians

Technology has made it easier than ever to keep safe from harm, from parental controls to mobile wallets.  But as tech shifts into new territories like artificial intelligence, machine learning, and facial recognition, new obstacles arise. Uneven policies across platforms can cause confusion. Some automated filtering tools have proven unable to differentiate news from propaganda. Crudely implemented keyword blacklisting sanitizes and shrinks content that falls outside mass appeal.

Separating insidious content is a noble goal, but it’s a moving target filled with nuance. There remains a need for transparency in the rationale and criteria we use to evaluate content permissibility.  Advertisers and publishers have the power to use tech to affect change. The pandemic showed the world that when used for the common good, technology platforms can help to track and trace the disease, remove false information, and find brands and organizations ready to help.
